Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 - The day which was quite normal for some but also the worst nightmare for the others for whom this day will never be forgotten.

Synopsis

Large upper-level trough was digging into central Europe with a sharply defined cold front approaching Slovenia over the Alps. Quite impressive southwesterly winds were present in the mid-level, during the day a weak surface low pressure system has formed in the northern Mediteranean. Only weak southwesterly surface winds were present across the Slovenia while strong southerly winds (Scirocco/Jugo) were present in the northern Adriatic. First thunderstorms moved into Slovenia in the early morning hours from northern Italy. During the late morning a combination of strong forcing and moderate vertical wind shear in very unstable quasi-tropical airmass caused strong orographic lifting along the main mountain range in western Slovenia, severe storms with torrential rainfalls were forming and persist there for the next couple of hours. Later on torrential rainfalls spreaded also into the mountainous areas of northern Slovenia. Severe storms with torrential rainfalls persist for several hours until the late afternoon along the mountain ranges in Julian Alps, Škofjeloško, Polhograjsko Hribovje and Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe.

Generally, torrential rainfalls across the mountainous areas of western Slovenia are present with strong southwesterly flow aloft, when strong forcing causes lifting of warm and humid airmass over the mountain range (orographic precipitations). Rainfalls are usually the strongest when airflow is somehow perpendicular to the mountain range. If there is also an unstable airmass present, additional lifting is made towards the ranges which leads into even stronger rainfalls.

This situation was a classic situation with southwesterly flow, but unusually strong forcing and wind shear was stretching across the extremely unstable airmass. Southwesterly flow aloft was so strong that precipitation maxima was behind the mountain range (A nice example of this phenomena can be seen from these data; Zatolmin 201mm, Vogel 304mm, Bohinjska Češnjica 352mm; Zatolmin is on the southwestern side of the mountain range, Vogel is on the top of it and Bohinjska Češnjica is on the northeastern side behind the mountain range). Later in the afternoon, when the cold front was crossing northern Italy, the jet max moved more to the east and strong lifting over the mountain ranges slowly weakened. In the early evening severe storms with locally torrential rainfalls and strong winds hit south and southwestern Slovenia where strong diurnal heating and favorable vertical wind shear was present ahead of the cold front, the most severe storms were forming along the frontal boundary. The cold front passage was in the first half of the night, then precipitations gradually decreased from northwest.
